Content of the Course

Description: Learning Goals

      • Students gain in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of current topics in the field of human-computer interaction and in business informatics in general. (LGBWL-1)
      • Students gain in-depth knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods to investigate research questions involving human subjects. (LGBWL-2)

Module Description

Students will get an extensive overview over the most current research methods to investigate research problems involving human subjects and their interaction with technologies. We start with quantitative research methods (e.g., experiments, surveys) and the associated analysis techniques. Afterwards, we discuss qualitative research methods including how to design semi-structured interview guides, how to conduct interviews and how to analyze the interviews. We will cover new data collection and analysis methods in the last part of the course. This will include automated tools such as interaction loggers as well as methods to measure the human body such as eye-tracking. The course will conclude by highlighting the need for today’s research considering ethical aspects when working with human subjects and will provide useful information on what needs to be considered when approaching the ethics board of research institutions.

Important Information

        1. We will use the forum function of OLAT for questions and answers: Click here.
        2. The research articles for the presentation part of the grade will be distributed in the lecture on November 1, 2021.

Literature:

Lazar, J., Feng, J. H., & Hochheiser, H. (2017). Research methods in human-computer interaction. Morgan Kaufmann.
The book by Lazar et al. (2017) serves as a reader for this course. It is accessible online via the library of Goethe University. We will augment the insights from this book by selected research articles applying the different methods presented in this course
The possible research articles for the presentations can be found here: PDF
The PDF versions of the articles can be found in our OLAT forum.

Registration

Instruction:

This module is limited to 35 participants.
A two-stage registration procedure with different deadlines applies. You have to take part in both stages!

Stage 1: Application Deadline: 27 September 2021 – 08 October 2021
Module Application via QIS: My Functions > Lectures occupy/sign off (Instruction Module Application)
Stage 2: Exam Registration and Withdrawal Deadline: 14 October 2021 – 27 October 2021
Exam Registration and Withdrawal via QIS: My Functions > Administration of exams (Instruction Exam Registration)
An acceptance in the application procedure entitles students to register for the allocated module, but it does not replace an exam registration. Without an exam registration in stage 2, the allocated module claim of the module application in stage 1 expires!

Assignment of Available Capacities: 28 October 2021 – Detailed information will be published on this website in due time.
For exchange students, module application as well as exam registration and withdrawal is not possible via QIS. Exchange students register or withdraw with a form within the exam registration and withdrawal deadline (not application deadline!). Forms and information are available at the Website of the Faculty's International Office.
The grade will be formed by a written exam of 45 minutes (50%) and a 30-minute presentation of selected research articles (50%). In order to pass the course, students need to get at least the grade “sufficient” (4.0) in each part, i.e., in the exam and in the presentation.
For the time being, we can only plan with the regulations of our examination regulations. This means that changes to the form of examination and the deadline for exam registration and withdrawal are possible. As soon as the University decides on alternative forms of examinations and other exceptions for the WiSe 2021/22, the Examination Office will inform you here. Please check the Examination Office News and your student e-mails (@stud.uni-frankfurt.de) regularly. We recommend subscribing to the Examination Office News.
